LATERAL LOADS AND BRACING IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

Buildings must be designed to resist not only gravity but also lateral loads. Storms attributed to climate change and the 2010-2012 Christchurch earthquakes give added point to these requirements.

For single-unit or semi-detached houses the basic reference  for assessing bracing demand is NZS 3604:2011 while Winstone’s booklet dated 2011 offers a solution to meet those demands by using mainly Gibraltar Board systems.

The new NZS 3604:2011 method of assessing lateral loads is more aligned to the NZ Loadings code than previous editions.  Winstone’s publication, also dated 2011, gives revised values for the various Gib bracing systems. It is necessary use the bracing demands assessed using the new code with the newly published values of bracing values of the gib bracing elements.
